I have had many heart aches over imagined catastrophes concerning this nest and the babies in it. I can see them plainly from my studio window, and have prayed for protection. Which brings me to an important lesson God showed me...I was sure they were attacked, eaten, hurt, etc. so many times. From my other experience with tree swallows being ravaged by raccoons, I have had this nest killed in my imagination, and have forgotten the God who made them, and who holds them dearly. He mentions sparrows-a most unlikely bird to watch if you are a bird-watcher-so common, very drab. Yet He has His eye on them. I guess you get the picture.
But I have woken in the middle of the night and prayed for my tree swallows, and then for my own nest.
I am watching today, because I have a suspicion the babies have left. I have been so careful-staying 50 feet away-not even weeding near the nest-just so my scent won't be detected and call in the killers.
My previous experience with tree swallows ended in my son and I taking 4 little babies to the Cornell Animal Companion Center in Ithaca (just a 30 minute drive from us), where the babies were tenderly and very competently cared for. I even got a 'letter' from the babies, thanking me for saving them, and telling me how they were! That was about 4 years ago. So this nesting is important for me. God can do easily even what we fear He can't do because of past experiences, or our own failures. Does that make sense?
But this sight really woke me up when I went outside with the geese to put them in their day time pen. First I was alerted by Sam's alarm call-which you would know right away is an alarm-especially coming from Sam. She is our 'kazoo' goose-for a good reason. So I looked where she was looking with her wide goose eyes, and saw a great blue heron in the very top of one of our cedar trees! I though he'd be gone by the time I got my camera. I talked to him, and he stayed put. I think he enjoyed the view from up there, but he was being dive-bombed by all the little birds in our yard (including the tree swallows), so finally spread his giant wings and took off.
P.S. The baby tree swallows are fledging as I write! I watched 2 of them leave the nest. Two more are just waiting for the right moment. I imagine the whole family flying in circles, catching feathers with joy...

wow,how lucky you were to have been there when the heron landed, what a sight!!!
I feel the same way you do,I fret & worry over these wild birds as if they were my own children. Then I just breathe, say a prayer,& give it to God.phylliso
I love birds too, although our visitors are of the very drab variety. I'll take what I can get! Sometimes we do have a roadrunner drop by and I rush out to get hamburger and put little burger balls all over...my cats watch the roadrunners but know quite better than to tangle with them.
That heron is incredible!!! I'm so glad you got a picture of him (her?).
Debra, I am do blessed by the quotes you added on the side of your blog...especially the first one. So true. Your love for birds is incredible. So inspiring. I'm so glad that you shared the history of you coming to associate love and birds. Love you!

Dearest Bean,
I sometimes wonder if those that are close to our Savior and have great love for Him, have a special relationship with Birds. i love them too, and use to think it was because I was named for one. I am so fortunate to live in a place that is filled with different Birds. Behind the house is the drainage ditch that is populated with some visitors...roseate spoonbill, wood stork, night heron, purple gallinule, and ibises at times. We also have a red Tailed hawk. I have seen other song birds too. I frequently feel that Albert ans I are escorted on our walks by a pair of cardinals. Thanks for your beautiful writing and photos. bag
As usual Debra you gave me a thrill with your pictures! I had no idea canadian geese would try to land on nests like that.
I hope the geese are well at Sparrowgrass! Do they have a swimming pool in the backyard? The puddleducks are still at the barn but they figured out how to get out of the goatpen on the side by our house and have been mullin around through there. They have not "yet" discovered my goldfish pond but I expect any day now to find them in it. lol They love to get in their big black rubber tub buckets and float and take bubble baths. Hairdoo's curl is even longer now. I think the two big ones are drakes. In August I'm gonna take their tubs away and drive them to the bigpond again. It's probably useless tho. They are not convinced they are ducks yet.
Well, hope you are having a wonderful night. Thanks for coming to see me! I know you are a busy lady.
My love to the gang,
Lea

I wish I could remember to carry my camera around like you do, Debra. I always miss the best shots!
I'm so glad you got to see your little ones leave the nest. I'm a worrier like you, and I'm always so glad when I know they have made it from the bird house and into the woods. That seems to be the goal of the parents -- to get them to the safety of the woods or bushes. The window of opportunity to see all this happen is so slim, and I missed it this year with my wrens!!!! So glad you got to see it all happen!
Hi Sis,
Happy Sunday!! You are indeed blessed to experience all that you do right in your yard. Thanks for always sharing the most interesting and wonderful photos with us. I know you mentioned that you too have been pondering on God's grace, I would love to hear what the Lord places upon your heart and spirit. I will do the same.
Luv Ya Lorie
This was beautiful Debra! I have a love and concern for birds, too... especially when I find a nest of babies... bluebirds had built their nest in one of my houses and laid eggs, but the purple martins were trying to invade... I was so heartbroken and MAD because bluebirds aren't known for their tenacity in defending their nests... well, I prayed and prayed for their safety, and soon I saw the baby bluebirds flying and was so happy! I know it was nothing I did, but the Father's tender care that protected them. Thanks for sharing this today!
I feel the same way with my bluebirds and wrens nesting on the property...one very early spring 2 years ago we discovered 2 dead male bluebirds huddled in the nesting box...I wonder if they didn't leave soon enough that winter or did they return too soon that spring?
I love the chipping sparrow and the song sparrow!
Your photographs and words are so tender. Your journals would make wonderful gift books...
I remember back...
Your posts are the GOOD in the world that we all need to hear more of!
Thank you for always sharing your heart in such a visual way...
:)
Hope your holiday weekend is wonderful~
Michelle
